Louise and Buckwheat- Equine Photography - Niagara Region

Meet Buckwheat. I’m here at Aspen Acres in Wainfleet, Ontario, where Buckwheat is a lesson horse. Buckwheat has been with Stacey - the owner of Aspen Acres since she went to college for Equine studies at the University of Guelph ( a number- big number- of years ago). I’m here to shoot the bond Buckwheat has formed with a new rider, Louise. Louise is new to riding, showing that age is no match for passion.

Some horses don’t need to be “ours” to become a part of us.

Louise contacted me with a request both playful and poignant: a photoshoot with her heart horse—before one of us is ’t here anymore, she joked. The horse isn’t hers in the official sense. He’s a steady lesson horse, familiar to many riders, including me. But for her, he’s something more: the one who opened the door to riding later in life, who carried her gently through first canters, and who listened without judgment when she needed quiet company.

New to the saddle but not to life, she reminds me that courage comes in all forms—sometimes in the shape of a grown woman deciding to try something new, sometimes in the shape of a borrowed horse who becomes a lifelong memory.

Together, they shared quiet moments during our session—nose touches, soft glances, a few deep sighs. It was less about the perfect pose and more about preserving a feeling: trust, affection, and a connection that doesn’t need ownership to be real.

Their bond was unmistakable. You could feel it in the way he leaned into her, and in the way she laughed at his quirks. These images aren’t just keepsakes—they’re a celebration of the kind of love that finds us when we’re brave enough to say yes to something new.

And while their time together may be borrowed, the joy they share is entirely their own.

“Had a photo session very recently and Shirley took so many pictures. Never rushing me and worked to ensure every picture was perfect!
In my opinion, Shirley is the best photographer in the Niagara region!”

Louise.
