Sweet Canine Shop: Handmade Treats with Heart in Niagara
Part of the Niagara Dog Community Series
🐾 Sweet Canine Dog Treats
There’s something special about meeting someone who didn’t just start a business—but built it out of genuine care.
For this feature in my Niagara dog business series, I sat down with the young entrepreneur behind Sweet Canine Shop, a small-batch dog treat business rooted in simple ingredients, thoughtful sourcing, and a whole lot of love for dogs.
🌿 From One Dog to a Growing Business
Like many great ideas, this one started at home.
What began as an effort to save money and avoid heavily processed store-bought treats quickly turned into something more. After making treats for her own dogs—and seeing how much they (and her friends’ dogs) loved them—she decided to take a leap and start selling them.
That leap paid off.
“I just started making it for my own dogs… and then some friends. Everyone was loving it, so I thought—why not?”
🐶 A Background Built Around Dogs
This isn’t just a side hobby—it’s built on years of experience.
Ales spent the past five years working with dogs at All Dogs Training Academy and previously studied veterinary technology. Along the way, she began questioning some of the common approaches to pet nutrition and leaned into a more natural, whole-food philosophy.
That curiosity—and willingness to learn—became the foundation of Sweet Canine Shop.
🍪 What Makes These Treats Different?
At the core of her business is a simple idea: keep it real.
Her treats are made using:
Whole, human-grade ingredients
Canadian-sourced meats
Fruits, vegetables, and fresh components
And just as importantly, they’re made without:
Preservatives
Corn, potatoes, and common fillers
Legumes and unnecessary additives
Everything is created in small batches with careful attention to quality and digestibility.
⭐ Fan Favourites (and Very Happy Dogs)
Two treats have quickly become standouts:
Blueberry Turkey Jerky
Bone Broth-Based Treats
The bone broth treats in particular are a labour of love—made from scratch and combined with ingredients like Greek yogurt, oats, honey, and coconut oil.
And the response?
Overwhelmingly positive.
Even picky eaters seem to approve—one customer with a notoriously selective dog ended up coming back for 15 bags after trying them once.
🐾 Taste-Tested and Dog Approved
Every product goes through the most important quality control step: her own dogs.
Her bulldog, Fudge, and her lab, Arrow, are the official taste testers—and the inspiration behind everything she creates.
“They mean everything to me… they’ve brought me to places I didn’t think were possible.”
🌱 Why “All-Natural” Matters
For her, this isn’t about trends—it’s about longevity.
She believes that what we feed our dogs every day adds up over time. While the effects of highly processed treats may not always be obvious right away, they can impact long-term health.
Her goal is simple:
give dogs the best chance at a long, healthy life through better ingredients.
🛠️ Building a Business from Scratch
Starting a business without a background in business isn’t easy—and she’s honest about that.
Her biggest challenge?
Confidence.
But through programs like Niagara’s Starter Company Plus and learning from her family’s experience in business, she’s been able to grow not just her brand—but her belief in herself.
And that growth shows.

💬 Looking Ahead
Unlike many businesses chasing rapid growth, her vision is refreshingly grounded.
She’s not aiming for a massive corporation—just something sustainable, meaningful, and aligned with her values.
“I just want something that supports me and my partner—and lets me do something I love.”
❤️ More Than Just Treats
At the end of the day, this isn’t just about dog treats.
It’s about care.
It’s about intention.
And it’s about the bond we share with our dogs.
And sometimes, something as simple as a treat can reflect all of that.
